University-Sponsored SAE Engineering Scholarships: University of South Carolina

FRANK B. HERTY SAE ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIP
The University of South Carolina was chartered as South Carolina College in 1801. Today the University serves the entire state and includes, in addition to the Columbia campus, two four-year campuses and five regional campuses offering primarily two-year programs. Enrollment on all campuses totals 35,000, with 23,000 on the Columbia campus. The University offers more than 300 degree programs. The South Carolina Honors College is a part of the Columbia campus and is designed to offer the academically gifted undergraduate the finest advantages of a small college in the context of a large comprehensive university. A significant number of engineering students are enrolled in the Honors College.

The College of Engineering and Information Technology at the University of South Carolina is a leading research institution in engineering education and economic development in the Southeast. The college is composed of five departments: chemical engineering, civil and environmental engineering, computer science and engineering, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering. All of the engineering programs are ABET accredited. The college embraces the concept of combining an engineering education with the liberal arts to produce well-rounded graduates. The Swearingen Engineering Complex has more than 500,000 square feet of state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and laboratory space, making it one of the largest educational facilities in the Southeast. Strong emphasis is placed on both basic and applied research with specialized offerings in the Center for Industrial Research, the Center for Machine Intelligence, and the Center for Fracture Mechanics and Non-Destructive Analysis.

Student Eligibility Requirements:

  • High school senior accepted as an incoming freshman at this university.
  • Accepted into the Mechanical Engineering program.
  • Citizen of the United States (not permanent resident) at the time of application.
  • Minimum 1300 SAT score.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • In addition to the academic record, selection will be based on the student’s activities.

Terms of Scholarship:

  • One $2,000 scholarship will be awarded.
  • Renewable for 3 additional years if criteria are met.
  • This scholarship is not transferable to another university.

Application Deadline: December 15

How to Apply:

  • Download the application and save it to your hard drive as a Word document.
  • Complete the application. All applications must be typed (hand-written applications will be rejected).
  • Email the completed application (in Word or .pdf format) along with any additional documentation required for each scholarship (e.g., SAT/ACT scores, letters of recommendation, etc.) to scholarships@sae.org.
  • Submit copy of your official transcript to:

  • All information must be submitted by December 15.
  • Application for this scholarship does not constitute an application for admission to the university. The student is responsible for applying for admission to this university. If application to this university is not made before January 15, the scholarship application will be disqualified.

Selection and Announcement of Recipient:

  • Recipient(s) will be selected and notified by this university.
  • Results for the recipients of the SAE Scholarships Program will be posted online by the end of July.

Terms for Renewal of Scholarship:

  • May be renewed directly through the university for three additional years if criteria are met.
  • Maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average.
  • Remain enrolled full time in the Mechanical Engineering program
