Sales Presentation Volunteer Information
Position Title: Sales Presentation Judges
Activity: Formula SAE Static Event
Position Description: Each team makes a formal presentation to convince a panel of judges to invest in their race car business proposal. In this role play, the judges typically act as representatives of a fictitious manufacturing company. The competitors in this event will be judged on their ability to create and deliver a business case that convinces the judges that the team’s design best meets the demands of the amateur weekend competition market and that it can be profitably manufactured and marketed. The judges then score the presentation against predefined criteria (Appendix S-6 of the Formula SAE Rules), including the presentation content, quality of the presentation, its delivery, and the ability to defend the business proposal in the question and answer session.
Team presentations are scheduled in 30 minute intervals. Team presentations are limited to 10 minutes followed by a 5-minute question and answer period. Judges then have 5 minutes to complete scoring.
Judges if available are invited to provide general feedback during public Presentation Seminar where student teams can also ask questions; session takes place following morning.
Preferred Skills/Qualifications/ Experience: Presentation judges should be familiar with the basic criteria on which a manufacturing firm would select a new design for production. Our judges have very diverse backgrounds and experience which helps cover the broad range of topics that are discussed in this part of the competition. These include knowledge of automotive / motorsport markets, automotive engineering, race team operation and management, business finance and management, product design and development, production engineering, manufacturing, project management, quality, commercial distribution and product support. We also have industry practitioners and lecturers from universities and specialist colleges who cover topics far outside of these fields. We also have several Formula SAE alumni who have competed in the past competitions. And individuals from several media outlets
Orientation and Training: All volunteers will need to read the rules, and will be given onsite training at the competition. WebEx session is also available.
Work Conducted via: Prior to competition, student teams are required to submit a Business Logic Case to encourage commonality amongst static events Sales Presentation, Vehicle Cost, and Vehicle Design. Judges will need to review these documents for assigned teams prior to judging. Judges will be asked to use the Business Logic Case to judge whether the given presentation is appropriate for the market and business strategy that the team has identified; Onsite judging.
Time Commitment: Review of Business Logic Case may take up to 1 – 2 hours; Onsite judging has a 1 day minimum; 1.5 days preferred (Thurs; Fri morning for seminar)
