IC Scrutineer Volunteer Information (Michigan and Nebraska)

Position Title: Scrutineer (Internal Combustion Vehicles – Michigan and Nebraska)

Activity: Formula SAE Technical Inspection

Position Description: Technical inspection breaks in 4 parts.

Step 1 - Technical Inspectors will examine each vehicle to determine if it complies with the requirements and restrictions of the Formula SAE Rules. Inspections are conducted using a technical inspection check list that is published on the Formula SAE website.

All components and accessories of the cars relevant to safety are inspected and any weaknesses are fed-back to the teams along with guidance on practical solutions to help them progress through the subsequent tests and ultimately on to the dynamic events. Key elements such as the placement and fastening of fuel, braking and intake systems are checked along with the operation of the emergency cut-off switches.

This is the first test all the cars must go through and once passed, the car will be awarded the first “Tech” sticker and can proceed to the next step; each additional step a tech sticker will be awarded once team passes the test.

Step 2 – 4 will be operated by other areas: Tilt, Noise, Brake

Preferred Skills/Qualifications/ Experience:

Technical inspectors should be qualified scrutineers or people familiar with vehicle engineering, design and fabrication. Understand Formula SAE Rules.

Orientation and Training: All volunteers will need to read the rules, and will be given onsite training at the competition. If available there is also opportunity to attend pre-event training. Those who are a first-time scrutineer will be placed with a more experienced scrutineer initially.

Work Conducted via: onsite

Time Commitment: 3 days; prefer a 2-day minimum (Wed, Thurs, Fri)
