Template Penalties for the 2009 Formula SAE Series

2009 Formula SAE Rules B-4.1 “Cockpit Opening” and 4.2 “Cockpit Internal Cross Section” require that the cockpit opening and leg area of the vehicle meet or exceed the minimum dimensions of templates depicted in Figures 8 and 9. Although the “template rules” takes effect with the 2009 competitions they were announced in Section 6 of the 2008 Rules, which were released September 1, 2007, so teams would have plenty of time to make their 2009 designs comply .
Procedural Improvements for the 2009 FSAE Competitions

During the 2008 Formula SAE competitions the Rules were applied to some new and unexpected situations and produced consequences that were not contemplated when the rules were drafted. Applying old rules to new situations can sometimes produce inequitable results. Although the 2008 Rules were followed as published, and as they have been historically applied, no one agreed with the outcomes.
